Semantic Agent Systems: Foundations and Applications (Edited Book by
Springer-Verlag)

Integrating agent and semantic Web technologies in order to extend the
ability of programs have long been hailed as the most efficient way to
serve users. The idea is to significantly affect performance of
application software employing cooperating multi-agent systems through
the use of semantic Web services and domain ontologies. The Semantic Web
has matured to a great extent with ontology-based applications being
built by several major enterprises. However, research and development
concerned with the integration of the semantic Web and software agent
technologies are moving at snail’s pace. To bring our contribution, we
initiated around November 2005, the series of IEEE International
Workshop on Engineering Semantic Agent Systems in conjunction with the
30th International Computer Software and Applications Conference
(COMPSAC 2006) in Chicago, Illinois, USA. After four annual workshops,
preparing to announce the fifth, and two journal special issues on this
theme, we are soliciting contributions from research experts and
practitioners for an edited volume in the series Studies in
Computational Intelligence” (http://www.springer.com/series/7092) by
Springer-Verlag.

Proposal submission:
-------------------
We welcome original high quality contributions on the theme of Semantic
Agent Systems along the aspects of foundation, theory, models,
engineering, and applications. Substantially revised and extended
versions of papers presented at conferences and workshops are also
encouraged provided that the new content exceeds 50% of the paper. A
2-page chapter proposal may be uploaded to the submission site
(https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/SASFA2010/) as soon as possible.
Authors will be notified of the outcome within two weeks. Draft and
final chapter proposals of about twenty pages must conform to Springer's

Special Issue on:

"Mobile, Multimedia, Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks"

Ad hoc and sensor networks have received considerable attention from
both the academic community and industry for many years, since these
networks are the key underlying infrastructure for realising next
generation networking and computing, e.g., ubiquitous computing, 4 G all
IP networks. Along with the rapid development of hardware and embedded
systems, ad hoc and sensor networks are being further developed towards
a large number of mobile and multimedia applications, e.g., video
surveillance, traffic enforcement and control systems, advanced
healthcare delivery, structural health monitoring, and industrial
process control.

To eventually realise these mobility and multimedia technologies
combined applications, significant efforts are still needed from both
the academic community and industrial fields, since the requirements for
supporting both mobility and multimedia streaming in wireless ad hoc and
sensor networks raise many challenging issues, e.g., mobile network
self-organisation, limited resource intelligent allocation, cross-layer
optimisation, and intelligent content-aware transmission.

The explosive growth of digital photos and videos; the prevalence of
capture devices; and the advent of media-sharing services, such as
Flickr and YouTube, have drastically increased the volume of
community-contributed multimedia resources. Billions of photos,
videos, and music shared on Web sites profoundly impact human society
and pose a new challenge for designing efficient indexing, search,
mining, and visualization methods for manipulating such largescale
media. Besides plain visual or audio signals, social media are
augmented with rich context—such as user-provided tags, comments,
geolocations, time, and device metadata—benefiting a wide variety of
potential applications such as annotation, search, recommendation,
advertising, and visualization.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on:
Hardware Architectures for Genetic, Neural and Fuzzy Systems

Genetic Algorithms (GA), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as well as
Fuzzy Systems (FS) are becoming omnipresent in almost every intelligent
system design. Just to name few, engineering, control, economics and
forecasting are some of the scientific fields that enjoy the use of ANN
and FS. Unfortunately, the majority of the applications is complex and
so requires a large computational effort to yield useful and practical
results. Therefore, dedicated hardware for evolutionary, neural and
fuzzy computation is becoming a key issue for designers. With the spread
of reconfigurable hardware such as FPGAs and FPAAs, digital as well as
analog hardware implementations of such computation become cost-effective.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on:
Evolutionary Synthesis of Network-on-Chip Based Systems

Network-on-Chip (NoC) is an emerging paradigm for communications within
large VLSI systems implemented on a single silicon chip. IT is used as a
new approach to designing complex System-on-a-chip (SoCs) design.
NoC-based systems can accommodate multiple complex SoC designs. In a
NoC-based system, modules such as processor cores, memories and
specialized IP blocks exchange data using a on-chip network. A NoC is
constructed from multiple point-topoint data links interconnected by
switches also called routers, such that messages can be relayed from any
source module to any destination module over several links, by making
routing decisions at the switches. VLSI designers of NoC-based systems
face several problems, among which we can cite, for instance, planning
the architecture that is most suitable to a given application is order
to improve performance and mapping the sub-systems that form the
application into the multiple tiles of the NoC infra-structure.
Evolutionary computation can be used as a very robust tool to bring some
answers to this kind of design problems.

Special Issue on Advances in Theory and Applications of Wireless,
Ad Hoc, and Sensor Networks

Wireless networks have gained much popularity in recent years due to
their ease of accessibility and mobility. However, as the dimension of
wireless devices decreases and the network density increases, energy and
bandwidth resources become increasingly scarce and innovative networking
solutions must be developed to overcome these challenges. Moreover, due
to the large demand for wireless connectivity in different applications,
wireless networks have evolved into various forms including wireless
metropolitan networks, local area networks, mesh networks, ad hoc
networks, and sensor networks, etc. Integration over heterogeneous
systems becomes essential to fully capitalize on the functionalities and
services they provide. In addition, advances in theory are required to
achieve these goals and new applications may arise to leverage these
advantages.

Subject: CFP: Special Issue on Localized

From: efnaka@gmail.com
To: cse-cfp@cse.stfx.ca

CALL FOR PAPERS

Elsevier's Information Fusion Journal, Special Issue on Localized
Algorithms for Information Fusion in Resource-Constrained Networks

The Information Fusion Journal (IFJ), an Elsevier publication (JCR
2008: 2.057), is planning a special issue devoted to Localized
Algorithms for Information Fusion in Resource-Constrained Networks.
Resource-Constrained Networks (RCNs) include a wide variety of
networks in which resources – such as processing, communication, and
energy – are limited. Examples of RCNs include ad hoc networks,
sensor networks, mobile networks, and pervasive systems. In RCNs, the
tradeoff between data quality and resource usage (especially energy)
is a major concern. In this case, Localized Algorithms and Information
Fusion are particularly interesting for RCNs, since the development of
efficient practical solutions and algorithms is possibly the most
challenging task for such networks. On one hand, Localized Algorithms
are special distributed algorithms in which only a subset of nodes
partakes in the network tasks, such as data acquisition, processing,
and communication. On the other hand, Information Fusion is often used
for improving the quality of data being transmitted in these networks.
Thus, Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion must deal with the
challenge of working with partial views, or incomplete data, to
provide accurate results at reduced cost.

Subject: The Third IEEE International Scalable Computing Challenge
(SCALE 2010)
From: d.katz@ieee.org
To: cse-cfp@cse.stfx.ca

The Third IEEE International Scalable Computing Challenge (SCALE
2010), sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on
Scalable Computing (TCSC).

Objective and Focus: The objective of the Third IEEE International
Scalable Computing Challenge (SCALE 2010), sponsored by the IEEE
Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC), is
to highlight and showcase real-world problem solving using computing
that scales.

Effective solutions to many scientific problems require applications
that can scale. There are different dimensions to application scaling:
for example, applications can scale-up to large number of cores or
compute units, scale-out to utilize multiple distinct compute units,
or scale-down to release resources that are no longer needed. In order
to scale, applications need the support of tools, middleware,
infrastructure, programming systems, etc. SCALE is concerned with
advances in application development and supporting infrastructure that
enable scaling.

Call for Proposals: The Third IEEE International Scalable Computing
Challenge (SCALE 2010) contest will focus on end-to-end problem
solving using concepts, technologies and architectures (including
Clusters, Grids and Clouds) that facilitate scaling. Participants in
the challenge will be expected to identify significant current
real-world problems where scalable computing techniques can be
effectively used, and design, implement, evaluate and demonstrate
solutions. SCALE2010 will be held in conjunction with the 10th CCGrid
Conference in Melbourne, Australia on 17-20 May, 2010.

We invite teams to submit white papers outlining the problem addressed
and the technologies employed to enable applications to scale. White
papers should be up to 4 pages long, 12-pt. font and single column,
and in addition to listing team members and contact information,
should clearly outline:

1. The problem being solved and the technology employed
2. The application scenario and its requirements
3. Performance data and a qualitative description of how the
application scales -- scale-up, scale-out or any other type of scaling
4. The solution -- architecture, underlying concepts and technologies
used -- highlighting the innovative aspects of the solution
5. Impact of the solution, including extensibility and uniqueness of
results, and the extent to which the presented solution pushes the
envelope in scalable computing
6. Analysis of solution and technology employed compared to related
approaches

Papers will be shortlisted using the above 6 points as merit criteria,
and up to 6 papers will be invited to compete in a final round at
CCGrid 2010.

In addition to the above, finalists will be judged on the quality of
their presentation, which shall include a 5-minute demonstration, as
well as their responses to questions by a technical committee.

Participation from students and young researchers, especially in
leadership roles, is strongly encouraged. Selected teams will receive
an award of up to $1000 to help with travel to the conference. At
least one member from each selected team will be expected to present
and demonstrate their project at CCGrid 2010.

Awards:
First prize: Plaque + $1000
Third prize: Plaque + $500

Tentative timeline:
The deadline for submitting proposals is 01 Feb, 2010. Decisions: 15
Feb, 2010.
Final presentation/demo: 17-20 May, 2010.
